Nicholas Holdgate M.D.
A native of Nantucket Island, Massachusetts, Dr. Holdgate first moved to Charleston, SC in 1996 where he attended Porter-Gaud School and then College of Charleston. After receiving his B.S. in Physics in 2003, he had the privilege to work for NASA at Goddard Space Flight Center. He returned to Charleston to attend medical school at the Medical University of South Carolina where he was awarded the President’s Basic Science Award and received the honor of Presidential Scholar, receiving his M.D. in 2011. He stayed at MUSC to complete a 3 year internship and residency in Internal Medicine before going to Duke University Medical Center for his Fellowship training in Rheumatology. At Duke he not only gained experience in research, and the clinical care of patients with a wide variety of rheumatic diseases, but also sought additional training at the Duke Eye Center in the care of inflammatory eye diseases (Uveitis), as well as additional training in the use of musculoskeletal ultrasound. He moved back to Charleston to practice at Lowcountry Rheumatology in 2016 and is board certified in Internal Medicine and Rheumatology. Among other professional organizations, Dr. Holdgate is a member of the American College of Rheumatology, South Carolina Rheumatism Society, and the North Carolina Rheumatology Association. Dr. Holdgate spends his free time with his wife, a native of Charleston and pastry chef, and his two children whom love swimming, boating and the outdoors.
